A few weeks ago, I had the honor of speaking at Forbes Riley's FredX event. I didn't talk about branding. I didn't talk about content strategy or social media or any of the things I'm known for.

I asked the room to stand up.

And then I asked a question.

Almost no one sat down.

What happened in that room, the vulnerability, the honesty, the tears — reminded me why I do the work I do. Because before any of us can show up powerfully in our brands, we have to believe we're worth being seen at all.

You Are Seen

I'm going to take a moment and talk to your heart.

Would you do me a favor and stand? Even if you're reading this from your desk, your couch, or your car — I want you to be present with me for just a minute.

I have a question for you. A deep one.

If you know someone in your life who has been abused — please stay standing.

Now — if the person who abused them was a stranger. Someone they didn't know. The kind of danger we warn our children about. If that's the case, sit down.

When I asked that question in the room that day, no one sat down.

Because it's almost never a stranger.

Then I asked one more thing — the brave thing. The vulnerable thing.

If the person who was abused... was you — will you stay standing with me?

So many stayed standing. So many of us love someone who is still standing.

What does that mean?

It means that so many of us have learned to see our lives through a distorted lens. A cracked and broken lens. One that whispers —you are useless. You are unworthy. You are unlovable.

Lies that were handed to us before we even had words for them. Some of us, before we were three years old.

But here's what I know: that is not who you are.

You were full of life. Curious. Present. You loved the world and the world was meant to love you back. You just weren't always safe to be yourself.

There is a story that changed everything for me. It's an old story — ancient, really — but it has never felt more relevant.

Her name was Hagar.

She was a slave in Egypt. Sold. We don't know how old she was or how she came to be there. Crimes were committed against her. She was placed into a household not by choice, forced into situations no woman should ever have to endure.

She was broken. Lost. In so much pain that she took her young son and walked away — because she simply couldn't carry it anymore.

But in that moment of despair, something remarkable happened.

God spoke to her. One of the only accounts in all of Scripture where God speaks directly to a woman.

He told her: I have you. I see you. I will always take care of you.

And she responded with words that have stayed with me ever since:

"You are the God of sight. You see me."

Everything everyone else has ever said about you — every label, every lie, every wound — that is not you.

It never was.

We are seen by something far greater than our worst moments. Far greater than our broken mirrors and our distorted reflections. Far greater than what anyone has ever done to us or said about us.

He sees you.

So the next time you stand in front of a mirror, I want you to try something. Look with that same love. That same compassion. That same certainty that you are seen and worthy and whole.

And when you step in front of a camera — whether it's for a branding shoot, a reel, a headshot, or a keynote — bring her with you. The real you. The one who was always there before the world told you to hide.

That's the woman the world needs to see.

And that's the woman I see.
